Guillermo uses language as a narrative trick that plays with different levels and hides a complicated web of symbolisms tied to his interest in challenging and revealing the obsolescence of a world of definitions and rules. “The Depths Come Out” breaks with a simple premise “to pass before what is behind,” which the artist himself describes as “a not only physical positioning, but also a symbolic one.”

The series is based on a clear premise: bringing to the front what is usually behind. In the artist’s own words:
“When I learnt to paint at the academy, the first rule my teachers gave me was to create a gradient background in the first layer, as it would generate the illusion of space. From that background, I was meant to build the image layer by layer, moving forward. With this series, I wanted to reverse that order, to turn the logic of the painting around, and bring the background from the last layer to the foreground, covering the underlying layers.”
