“I began filling each hole in my bungalow with those caps, remarkable for their chromatic variety and originating from as diverse places as China, Austria, and Canada.”

“During my residency at Casa Wabi in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, in 2018, I created a site-specific intervention on Tadao Ando’s concrete walls. Every morning, I would walk for an hour along the beach, collecting plastic bottle caps that had washed up on the shore. One day, upon returning to my bungalow, I decided to place a cap in one of the holes in the concrete wall and found that it fit perfectly.
I began filling each of the holes in my bungalow with these caps, which displayed an incredible variety of colors and origins as diverse as China, Austria, and Canada. The gray walls were transformed by these small dots of color from different “nationalities.” What started as a simple gesture to clean up the beach evolved into a vibrant and playful enhancement of the sober concrete walls. The architecture of my room began to resemble Hansel and Gretel’s little house, adorned with tiny colorful dots that seemed like candies.
By the end of my residency, every interior and exterior wall of my bungalow was covered with these caps. Only photographic documentation of this intervention remains.”
