“I wondered if I could continue painting with a staple gun, through a repeated gesture with a tool attached to my hand. This was the trigger for the series Sí pero no.”

Guillermo Mora

Guillermo Mora’s Sí pero no series, initiated in 2020, comprises a set of site-specific paintings created through a subtractive process. The artist staples sheets of paper to the wall following a specific protocol and then manually tears them away, unveiling and liberating the surface, thereby altering both his methodology and perception of the medium.

This subtractive technique engages mechanisms prevalent in his work, such as the accidental and the mutable. By removing the paper, Mora not only eliminates material but also leaves traces of the action, incorporating the physical gesture into the final piece.

The artwork is delivered in a kit accompanied by an instruction manual, enabling the purchaser to recreate the piece, thereby engaging with the concept of authorship.

The series was first presented at Sala Alcalá 31 in 2022, followed by exhibitions at Centre Pompidou Málaga in 2023 and Irène Laub Gallery in Brussels.
